Government Impact Team Update – June 7th

Governor Ducey Needs to Hear From You on Election Integrity Bills Sent to him May 31st, Still awaiting his signature:
While he vetoed HB2617 to clean up the voter rolls there are still other election integrity bills you can ask him to support.  Please ask him here to sign these important bills:

  • SB1260 – short title: election registration; early voting; move notice – this has a number of changes to Arizona statutes 16-165, 16-544 and 16-1016 relating to conduct of elections.
    • cancels a voter registration (and early voting list if applicable) when the county recorder gets confirmation from another county that a person has registered in that other county.
    • Requires a person that receives an early ballot at an address at which another person formerly resided, to write “not at this address” on the envelope and place the mail piece in the US postal service box.
    • Adds to the class 5 felony list, a person who knowingly provides a mechanism for voting to another person who is registered in another state, including by forwarding an early ballot addressed to the other person.
  • SB1362 – early ballot on-site tabulation – again this bill has a number of changes and additions to the Arizona statues related to early ballots.
    • this bill adds consideration of early ballots when defining number of voting locations to ensure wait times to vote do not exceed the current requirements.
    • Allows for tabulation of early voter ballots on-site at locations as long as the proper new additions of process are followed such as the qualified elector presents their early voter ballot and presents their ID, the processing of the early voter ballot is kept separate from the other ballots, provide adequate poll workers, election officials and equipment necessary to conduct voting pursuant to the law, categorize and tally separately in the official canvass by precinct, reconcile for that polling place or voting center the number of electors who appear on the signature roster or e-pollbook with the number of completed early ballot affidavits and the voted early ballots tabulated on site.

True the Vote (source of 2000 Mules Drop Box Data) Presented to our AZ Senate Legislature this past week.

  • You can see the video of their presentation here giving options for a short version as well as the full 2.5 hours or so.
  • Highlights are specific numbers of mules in Maricopa that average 21 drop box visits!
  • They also provided recommendations to our legislature for laws to avoid some of the fraud seen – such as getting rid of drop boxes OR install cameras to record people as they place ballots in the drop boxes.  They noted that in the 2020 election Maricopa only had one camera and even that one did not have a direct view of the drop box, but rather a wall that obscured the view of the actual drop box.
  • The Senate has completely rewritten HB2289 back in late February to eliminate drop boxes and demand precincts not exceed 1500 voters so that we can have elections go back to ONE day and counting of ballots complete within 24 or 48 hours.  Not clear why this has stalled in our Senate but I would ask all to encourage our Senators (contact them here) to bring this bill through committee and out for a vote to then transmit back to the House before end of June when their session will end.

Volunteer to be an Observer during Elections

  • GOP needs 800+ volunteers to work elections polling locations and drop boxes in Maricopa County.  Training for being an observer is being conducted in  the month of June, to support the Primary election that lasts from July 7th to August 2nd. And should then support the general election in November.
  • You can volunteer for one day or up to the full 27 days of elections . You must be vetted through the Maricopa County Republican Committee coordinator to attend the training and get your credentials.
  • Please contact Heide Grande at Heidi.grande@azgop.org as soon as possible to volunteer.  She will request some of your voter registration  information to validate you.  Then you will get an email with options to sign up for the necessary one hour training class. This training will give you the Do’s and Don’ts, the forms and what you as an observer will do while Poll Observing at one of the Maricopa County Voting Centers.
